This March 3, one of the most important albums of heavy metal and American masterpiece of Metallica, Master of Puppets, his third studio release, turns 25. A quarter-century, since its launch in 1986. A key album in the career of the group, and that catapulted them to success and worldwide recognition, and one of the most influential heavy metal band of all time.

The successor to Ride the Lightning (1984) was the last album he recorded his original bassist Cliff Burton, who died in a bus accident on the journey from Stockholm to Copenhagen, just on the tour to promote the album, in which Ozzy Osbourne the godfather, a fact which greatly helped to be recognized, therefore, obviously, by the quality of the disc.

Master of Puppets is considered by critics and fans as a true masterpiece of thrash metal, which shares such sitial with albums like Reign in Blood (1986) by Slayer and Rust in peace (1990), Megadeth, and other classic albums stand firm and majestic against the passage of time.

The plate was recorded between September 1 and December 27, 1985 in Copenhagen, Denmark with producer Flemming Rasmussen, who also recorded his last album, and who then work with Morbid Angel (Covenant) and Blind Guardian (Imaginations from the Other Side), among others.

The album has reached six times platinum in the United States, with about 6 million units sold. The same year of its launch had already reached one million units sold, making the number 29 position on the Billboard 200, quite an achievement considering the lack of promotion in media.

Topics such as "Battery" "Welcome Home", "Orion" and the eponymous "Master of Puppets" is derived from this classic album, all true gems of thrash and heavy metal. "Orion" is considered as an anthem of Cliff Burton, in fact, was the theme that was heard at the funeral of bassist.

Master of Puppets sound as fresh and as current as 25 years ago. Without doubt, a classic of classics, which continue to influence future generations. Happy 25 years!

El primer gran proyecto de la Comunidad The Beatles Fans ha concluido y quisiera agradecer a todos y cada unode los que participaron dando su opinión, que por suerte fueron muchos, por lo que se puede decir que ésta votación es representativa de la opinión general de la Comunidad.
Aquellos que no están al tanto deberían saber que durante más de 10 días los users de la Comu han calificado cada canción de la discografía oficial de The Beatles, separadas en diferentes listas que abarcaban 1 LP y singles u otras ediciones contemporaneas, poniéndoles puntos del 1 al 10 según su criterio.
Les dejo un link a modo de ejemplo del álbum Let it be, donde tambien encontrarán links a todos los discosanteriores, si es que quieren investigar.

Al finalizar la votación, con la gran ayuda de Maxwell_Edison, se han recopilado todas las calificaciones y se han sacado promedios de cada canción, para luego ordenarlas de mayor a menor y asi obtener el Ranking definitivo de todas las canciones de The Beatles. Con éstos datos se pueden obtener también otras estadisticas, como el mejordisco, el "peor" y hasta el promedio general de todas las canciones juntas, pero éso lo dejo para los temas de la Comu. Aqui les dejo el listado completo junto con el promedio final obtenido.

Hay algunas curiosidades, incluso en el Top 10. Una de las canciones no es un "peso pesado". El compositor que más canciones metió entre las 10 obtuvo las posiciones más bajas salvo por una y el que consiguió las mejores no ganó, pero se trata de uno de los que menos aportó en cantidad. Muchos de los clásicos quedaron en el Top 20 y la canción por la que la mayoría hubiera apostado que terminaría última, sorprendió dejando a otras 3 canciones detrás. El primer y segundo lugar estuvo muy luchado entre una candidata y una canción que es muy valorada pero que en teoría tenía muchas por delante. Así todo, se definió por apenas 2 centésimas.

Bueno, me dejo de dar datos y les dejo el listado completo. Primero un Countdown del Top 10 y luego el resto de las posiciones.

El iPad no reproducirá contenidos en formato flash, al menos de entrada. Tal decisión ha enervado a la gente de Adobe, que una vez más han visto cómo Apple da la espalda a su producto estrella, una circunstancia que por cierto también se da en el iPhone/iPod Touch. Lo curioso, y divertido, es cómo han reaccionado.

Para mostrar su total y absoluto desacuerdo con la medida adoptada por Steve Jobs, han publicado una entrada en uno de sus blogs oficiales en la que han enseñado una serie de webs muy conocidas que los futuros poseedores del tablet de Apple no podrán visualizar correctamente al no disponer de soporte para flash.

Las páginas seleccionadas son fácilmente reconocibles por cualquier internauta, especialmente si es estadounidense. Así tenemos los sitios de la CNN, Hulu, Google Finance, la Disney... y una paginilla porno de nada: Bang Bros. En Adobe no se andan por las ramas: la mejor manera para concienciar a la gente de la utilidad de flash es recordarles que sin él no tendrán la opción de ver millones de vídeos xxx que circulan por la Red. Más claro, el agua.

Sus argumentos son irrefutables, aunque... no sé, creo que hay maneras más elegantes de protestar ante una decisión que consideran injusta pero que, no lo olvidemos, tiene un trasfondo puramente empresarial.

El peculiar artículo ha dado mucho que hablar. Muchísimo. Infinidad de blogs, foros y diarios lo han enlazado. Tanto que es el primer resultado que aparece en Google al introducir los términos de búsqueda ipad flash. Tiene mucho mérito la cosa

Eso sí, algún directivo de Adobe debe haber advertido que este tipo de publicidad es lo último que les interesa y ha ordenado retirar la imagen en cuestión, que a estas horas ya no aparece en la entrada de la que os hablo. Un buen perfil en la Web 2.0 es clave para obtener trabajo

Ser usuario de LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter o escribir un blog puede ser más que útil para encontrar el próximo trabajo. Hoy, las herramientas de la Web 2.0 ofrecen una amplia y creciente plataforma de reclutamiento.

"Las plataformas 2.0 llegaron para que la interacción alcance al reclutamiento laboral. Las redes sociales nos permiten acceder a los mejores profesionales sin su previa postulación a un aviso", dijo la gerenta nacional de Operaciones de la empresa de recursos humanos Manpower, Cecilia Bologna. Los especialistas del área laboral coinciden que la Web 2.0 cambió el modelo comunicacional y de relación ya que posibilita una mayor interacción entre postulantes y empleadores. La personalización y humanización del mensaje, un mayor grado de accesibilidad a la información y la masividad de lo individual son algunas de sus fortalezas.

En una conferencia en la Universidad de Palermo, Marcela Petrillo, de la consultora Von Der Heide, sostuvo: "Las empresas y los postulantes cambiaron su forma de vincularse. Una red profesional es un recurso interesante para identificar talentos y da una visión más abarcativa".

La identidad digital conlleva la confección de un perfil. Según Petrillo, tiene más importancia el presente, las expectativas y los proyectos que la experiencia previa o la formación. "El reclutamiento se volvió estratégico. Hay más herramientas, pero también más planificación y criterio en la ruta para llegar a los potenciales postulantes", agregó. La especialista recomendó "tejer una red de relaciones" para el largo plazo y contar con referentes que identifiquen oportunidades de crecimiento.

Las redes profesionales pueden proveer contactos en función de los intereses y proyectos, y permiten recibir información sobre un nuevo mercado de oportunidades. La consultora Von Der Heide desarrolló Netiner, su propia red profesional para vincular compañías y candidatos.

Según Bologna, esta tendencia comenzó hace tres años y se propagó primero a las empresas de tecnología. "Podemos buscar desde puestos de base hasta jerárquicos, dependiendo de la red social; cada una apunta a diferentes segmentos", dijo la ejecutiva de Manpower. Y explicó que los profesionales que forman parte de esta red no son buscadores activos de trabajo, pero se ponen en exhibición esperando ofertas dirigidas (búsqueda pasiva) que le puedan significar desarrollo profesional. "A mediano plazo, los medios digitales tendrán muchísima más concurrencia porque las nuevas generaciones están optando por la postulación online ", añadió Bologna.

Bernardo Hidalgo, consultor en recursos humanos, dijo que la Web da herramientas para ejecutar un filtro poderoso de preselección de los candidatos. El especialista valora las recomendaciones que permite incluir LinkedIn. "Estas herramientas agilizan procesos y reducen costos, y permiten buscar en otros lugares del mundo." La etapa siguiente, para él, sería usar estas herramientas para selección. "En un par de años cualquier candidato va a estar conectado con cámara y Skype para hacer una videoconferencia", agregó. Consultado acerca de qué compañías fueron las pioneras en incorporar estas herramientas, Hidalgo expresó: "Como en todos los procesos de cambio, las empresas internacionales son las más proclives y nos exigen a los consultores que estemos a la vanguardia de la tecnología".

Adrián Herzkovich, vicepresidente del grupo televisivo Fox para América latina, sostuvo: "Todos se tienen que pensar como un producto que se puede vender, ofrecer y marketinear . Hay que estar en Internet". El ejecutivo recomendó dedicarle mucho tiempo a armar los perfiles en cada una de las redes sociales o profesionales, como Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter o MySpace.

Facebook : Se recomienda actualizar la información y pertenecer a grupos sobre temáticas de interés especializadas.

Linkedin : Tiene más importancia la información presente y los proyectos que la experiencia previa o la formación.

España: Más de 6.000 millones de euros para financiar la Iglesia católica

Los obispos pueden respirar tranquilos. El Concordato que rige las relaciones entre España y el Vaticano tiene una salud de hierro, a pesar de que ya han pasado más de 30 años desde su última revisión. El Gobierno no tiene en mente afrontar este tema, que afecta directamente a la financiación de la Iglesia católica.Esta institución proseguirá en 2010 con sus privilegios frente a otros credos minoritarios.

Pese a sus quejas, la jerarquía eclesiástica recibe enormes beneficios de las distintas Administraciones del Estado, que contrastan con la ausencia de ayudas al resto de religiones. Los datos son definitivos. Cada año, el Estado financia con más de 6.000 millones de euros las actividades educativas, sociales, sanitarias y de culto de la Iglesia católica. Sólo en centros escolares, se ceden más de 3.500 millones, más otros 600 destinados a pagar a los profesores de Religión u otros docentes en centros concertados.

La declaración de la renta reportó a los católicos 241 millones en 2009

A ello hay que añadirle los 241 millones que la Conferencia Episcopal obtuvo de la última declaración de la Renta (el 5% del total que recibe la Iglesia del Estado), los que van a parar a las ONG católicas a través de la otra casilla del IRPF, y las exenciones que, pese a lo que dice la ley, aún mantiene la institución.

En 2005, la Iglesia católica consiguió una sensible mejora de la financiación directa del Estado, a través del IRPF, al lograr un incremento hasta el 0,7%. En un año, se pasó de 150 a 210 millones. En el pasado ejercicio, la cifra ascendió a los 241 millones de euros. Y no parece que el sistema vaya a cambiar.

No ocurre lo mismo con las otras confesiones. Pese a que las negociaciones señalaban lo contrario, no contarán en 2010 con una casilla propia en el IRPF. Judíos, musulmanes y evangélicos tendrán que esperar, una vez más.

Judíos, evangélicos y musulmanes siguen en un segundo nivel

Durante la jornada de hoy tendrá lugar la entrega de credenciales del nuevo nuncio vaticano en España, Renzo Fratini, quien tiene la misión de mediar para que no se rompa la baraja en las relaciones Iglesia-Estado en España. Por el momento, los Presupuestos Generales del Estado para 2010 aprobaron, a última hora, la declaración de Bien de Interés Cultural de la Jornada Mundial de la Juventud (JMJ) , que en el verano de 2011 traerá a Benedicto XVI a Madrid.

Esto supone, entre otras cosas, que las empresas que financien el evento recibirán exenciones fiscales de hasta el 80%. Además, y aunque Ratzinger no viene a España como jefe de Estado, las distintas Administraciones garantizarán la seguridad de toda la jornada, así como lo relacionado con la sanidad, limpieza, logística... Algunas fuentes cifran que el gasto oscilará entre los 20 y 25 millones de euros.

Muere a los 89 años el cineasta Éric Rohmer

El director de cine francés Éric Rohmer ha muerto este lunes por la mañana en París, a la edad de 89 años, según ha confirmado su productora en Films du Losange, Margaret Menegoz.

Nacido en la ciudad de Nancy en 1920, Jean-Marie Maurice Scherer -su verdadero nombre- era uno de los cineastas principales de la llamada Nouvelle Vagueque trató de renovar el cine francés en los años 60 y 70 del siglo XX.

Entre las 27 películas que rodó en 50 años de carrera, se encuentran Mi noche con Maud, La Marquesa de O, y la serie de Cuentos para cada una de las estaciones. Logró el León de Oro de Venecia o el premio a la mejor película en San Sebastián.

Su última obra fue El romance de Astrea y Celadón, de 2007. "Después de esta película, creo que me retiraré", dijo cuando presentó la cinta en el festival de Venecia.

Crítico antes que cineasta

Considerado uno de los autores más personales y creativos del cine, Rohmre fue uno de los puntales de la Nouvelle Vague junto con Claude Chabrol, Jean-Luc Goddard y Francois Truffaut.

La búsqueda de realismo y la conducta humana caracterizaron sus trabajos, de granintimismo, frescura y simpleza narrativa y técnica.

En ellos prevalece el plano general que permite al espectador reflexionar con los propios personajes durante un desarrollo natural de la trama, envuelta casi siempre en las relaciones personales y el amor.

Como muchos de los miembros de la Nueva Ola, fue crítico de cine antes que cineasta. Trabajó como jefe de redacción de la revista francesa Cahiers du cinéma entre 1956 y 1963. Antes, en 1950, había fundado con Jean-Luc Godard y Jacques Rivette la revista de crítica cinematográfica Gazette du Cinema.

Logró algunos de los premios europeos más prestigiosos

El Signo del León, de 1959, fue su primer largometraje. En 1962 creó la productora Les Films du Losange junto al director alemán Barbet Schroeder y la productora Margaret Menegoz, que ha producido más de 80 películas.

Con La coleccionista obtuvo su primer reconocimiento, al lograr los galardones en el Festival de Berlín de 1967 a Mejor película para público joven y el del Premio especial del jurado. Logró una nominación al Oscar como Mejor película en habla no inglesa con Mi noche con Maud en 1970.

Eric Rohmer ha recibido, entre otros galardones, el Premio Max Ophuls de 1970, Premio Louis Delluc de 1971, mejor película del Festival de San Sebastián de 1971, Premio Mélies de 1971, Gran Premio Nacional de Cine de 1977, León de Oro de Venecia de 1986, Premio de la Crítica Internacional de 1986 y León de Oro de Venecia de 2001 a toda una carrera.

15 Twitter tips for beginners

A friend of mine has just set up a Twitter account so I wrote him an email with some instructions on how to get the most from it.

Thinking some of the advice might prove useful to others, I genericised it and re-posted it here.

Dunno how well you know Twitter - if I’m teaching Granny to suck eggs, apologies but if you are a noob, read on…!

Start off by posting a few innocuous posts - “trying out Twitter”, “Recently moved to Vancouver, anyone here from Vancouver?”, and some stuff introducing yourself your interests & why you’re using Twitter, e.g. “I hope to learn more about cleantech”, that kind of thing.
Then build up your network. Start with your friends you know to be on Twitter. Start following them. But also look at the list of people they are following. You may know some of them too, if so, add them to the list of people you follow too.
If you precede someone’s username with the @ symbol in a post on Twitter (i.e. “@tomraftery how is it going?”) then your post appears in the Reply tab on their Twitter page. This works whether they are following you or not. When you @reply to someone, they are likely to check out your profile and may decide to follow you. This is a very powerful way to build up your network with people who don’t necessarily know you but with whom you want to connect.
Check out the TwitterGrader page for your area, for instance, if you are based in Andalucia, in the south of Spain, like me, check the TwitterGrader page for Andalucia and you’ll find some interesting people you may want to connect to, to get into the local scene.
Follow some of the people there, check who they are following and talking to (@ replying to) and consider following them too.
Sidenote: if you precede someone’s username with “d ” (i.e. “d tomraftery how is it going?”) this sends a private message only to them - called a direct message or DM. You can only send DMs to people who have chosen to follow you.
Also, don’t be shy about asking your friends to pimp you to their followers!

Then, using Twitter:

On the computer - download & install Adobe AIR (if you don’t already have it installed). Then use either Twhirl or TweetDeck for posting/reading posts. I prefer TweetDeck. The Twitter web interface is still prob the best for checking people’s profiles and seeing who they follow.
On the iPod Touch/iPhone use Twitterfon, on Blackberry I hear Twitterberry is good and
On any other phone use dabr.co.uk - a web based mobile Twitter client
Always remember, if you @reply someone looking to get their attention or hoping they will follow you, they will likely click through to check out your Twitter page. There are many bots on Twitter so to weed out real/interesting users from bots I always look at a persons most recent posts to see what they are talking about (if their posts are all links to one site, forget it!), I look at the number of people they follow vs the number of people following them. If they are following 1,000 say and have very few followers, it is a sure sign that they are a bot who just auto-followed lots of people.
I also check out what the person says about themselves in the bio and click on their site, if they have one.
If you want people to follow you, then ensure your updates are not protected. Someone coming to your Twitter page and seeing Protected Updates is very unlikely to decide to follow you.
Purely a personal preference, but I think it is far better to use your own name on your Twitter account than some handle. It is a matter of personal branding but to my mind, a Twitter account called @JohnDoe tells me more about the user than @stargazr49!
Finally, a photo is also very important on your account, be sure to add one to your profile
BONUS EXTRA TIP!!! - Use your Twitter username everywhere - add it to your email sig, put it on your business cards, leave it in blog comments - don’t spam, just do it where appropriate.

I was born in Kansas and raised in Iowa, where I lived through high school. Art classes were always my favorite, taking every class our school had to offer while attending outside art classes at local community colleges. I spent most of early years creating my own animated shorts using different techniques such as: stop motion, traditional animation, live action, etc. In 2002, I moved to Sarasota, Florida to continue my education at Ringling College of Art and Design, graduating with a BFA in Computer Animation.

While in school, my first professional experience began at Coreaudiovisual (St. Louis, MO), a commercial production studio. As a Maya artist for Core, I worked on national television spots for Panoz Automotive Division, Visine and Energizer. The following year at Electronic Arts, I worked on Madden 2007 for multiple gaming platforms. Working directly with the Art Director, I created the preliminary visuals for the upcoming Madden title. In the summer of 2006, Project Firefly studios (founded by former Disney animators) brought me in to create their first 3D animation project (The Simpsons Ride for Universal Studios), for which I was responsible for 3D animation, modeling and rigging. Presently, I have been working at HumaNature Studios (Bay Area, CA) as an artist/animator for an original, unannounced title for Nintendo DS to be released early 2008. My recent side project has been the completion of a 30 second commercial spot for TV.

Conan O'Brien celebrated his final "Late Night" episode with best-of clips and a touching sendoff that praised future rival David Letterman and ongoing lead-in Jay Leno.

"He's probably one of the most brilliant broadcasters certainly of the last century, and this century, and for all time," O'Brien said of Letterman, whom he'll face in the fall when O'Brien takes over as "Tonight Show" host. "I have a terrific amount of respect for him and what he did -- he set the bar absurdly high for everybody in my generation who does this."

O'Brien appeared to get choked up as he thanked his crew and writers, as well as NBC executives (clips galore below).

"Lorne Michaels single-handedly made my career in television," O'Brien said. "I don't know what I did. I must have saved his life at some point. He certainly saved mine."

And regarding Leno, who will launch a new 10 p.m. show on NBC in the fall, O'Brien said: "His success turned into success for us. I owe that man a great deal, (and) I'm thrilled that he will continue to be my lead-in." (Yes, Letterman's praise was notably more effusive.)

Signing off, O'Brien said, "I read that it's time for Conan to grow up because he's going to 11:30, and I assure you ... that's not going to happen."

Last night's final original telecast of "Late Night" also delivered the show's highest metered-market household rating since December 2006 (2.6 HH rating).

Apparently, coffee and alcohol really do go together. Believe it or not, alcohol drinkers who also drink coffee regularly have a lower chance of developing cirrhosis of the liver. That’s not to say it’s a healthy lifestyle - obviously, lowering your alcohol consumption is better. But…science says…

Caffeine reduces risk of skin cancer. Sorry, venti quaffers, this prevention method is topical. Lotions containing caffeine (both from coffee and green tea) have been shown to prevent the occurrence of cancerous tumors on the skin - in murine trials, anyway.

Have a smile with your morning brew! If you’re a caffephile, you don’t need this Johns Hopkins study to tell you that a cup or two a day increases your sense of well-being and happiness. You can thank dopamine for that, which also contributes to coffee’s addictive nature. But be aware, the study also noted that more than 2 cups daily increases the risk of anxiety and panic attacks. Some people respond more readily than others - if you find yourself feeling jittery or nervous, ease up on the joe.

Caffeine may reduce chance of Parkinson’s Disease. A 30-year study has shown that non-coffee drinkers have a higher chance of developing Parkinson’s Disease than their coffee-drinking counterparts.

Most Americans get their antioxidants from coffee. That doesn’t mean it’s the best source of antioxidants, just that it’s the most consumed. But, it’s true, coffee is very high in antioxidants. As for me, I’ll stick to fruit.

Black gold. After petroleum, coffee is the second most valuable economic product in the world. Imagine the financial potential of running our cars on coffee grounds.

Coffee may cut colon cancer in women. A 12-year study on Japanese women found that drinking 3 or more cups of coffee per day may actually halve the risk of developing colon cancer. They found no beneficial effect from green tea on the colon - in this case, it was strictly a coffee thing.

Coffee and diabetes, that’s a tricky one. Even though a Finnish study shows that drinking large amounts of coffee can reduce the risk of developing Type-2 Diabetes, coffee drinkers who already have diabetes have a harder time controlling their blood sugar levels.

Coffee reduces muscle pain. After a hard workout, a cup or two of coffee has been shown to reduce muscle soreness (in women, anyway) more effectively than naproxen, aspirin and ibuprofen. (But don’t replace your water thermos with coffee.)

Coffee will detox your liver in surprising ways. This remedy is not one for drinking: we’re talking about the coffee enema. Some people swear by it - using a tube to introduce coffee into the rectum and colon in order to stimulate the liver to remove toxins. Definitely not for the squeamish.

Coffee may reduce chance of death from heart disease. Studies show that drinking 4-5 cups of coffee a day can make you less likely to die from heart disease. The researchers think it may have something to do with coffee’s anti-inflammatory effects.

The devil is in the grounds. When coffee, which originated in Ethiopia and became popular in the Arab world, was first introduced to Western culture, Christian priests denounced it as the devil’s drink, given to the Muslims as a substitute for the wine (Christ’s blood) they weren’t allowed to consume. The belief at the time was that any coffee-drinking Christian risked burning in hell forever. Hooray, progress!

Coffee may help with short term memory. It’s probably because of caffeine’s stimulant effects, but an Austrian study showed that volunteers given caffeinated coffee had better reaction times and short-term memory function than those who were given the cup of decaf.

For women, caffeine may prevent long term memory loss. Because caffeine is a psychostimulant, older women who drink 3 or more cups of coffee or tea a day have less memory loss and cognitive decline than their counterparts who drink less or none. Unfortunately, caffeine consumption doesn’t seem to have any preventative effect against dementia.

Caffeine won’t cause hypertension. Some of the studies can be contradictory and confusing. What we do know is that for non-habitual coffee drinkers, those first few cups will cause a temporary rise in blood pressure, but for regular drinkers, a tolerance develops and won’t cause any long term, permanent increase.

The injustice of cheap coffee. No, it’s not just an injustice to your connoisseur taste buds; conventional coffee farming exploits workers and destroys communities in third world countries. On average, 5% of the profits actually make it back to the farmers, who are hungry, underpaid and treated badly. Why do they work on coffee plantations at all? Because in many cases, the plantations own the most fertile land (which was most often acquired unscrupulously) and the local people won’t survive from subsistence farming alone. How can you avoid supporting the cycle of poverty, corruption and injustice? Only buy Fair Trade certified coffee.

Pesticides in your brew. Because almost all coffee is grown in third world countries with less stringent laws than Europe or the United States, your non-organic cuppa is probably laden with chemicals. That’s not just bad for you, it’s bad for the farmers and the tropical ecosystems in which the coffee is grown. Go organic, will ya?

Pick your poison - literally. Caffeine is an alkaloid, which is a type of poisonous, bitter substance found in plants. Other alkaloids include strychnine, nicotine, morphine, mescaline, and emetine (the deadly ingredient in hemlock). Fortunately, in small quantities the bean is harmless, but it’s worth thinking about if you choose to use other drugs (both pharmaceutical and recreational).

The FDA has approved caffeine for babies. This doesn’t mean you can wake up your sleepy infant with a bottle of latte. Caffeine injections have been used medicinally since 1999 in the United States to stimulate breathing in infants who are experiencing apnea. It’s still recommended that pregnant and breastfeeding women keep their caffeine intake to a minimum, but a modest amount is safe.

Coffee can fight cavities. Just avoid all the sugar and milk! Actually, roasted coffee has some antibacterial properties, particularly against Streptococcus mutans, one of the major causes of cavities. By the way, these properties have nothing to do with caffeine, so decaf drinkers will get the same protection.

Despite the positive health studies, it’s best not to intentionally pick up the caffeine habit if you’re not already a regular coffee drinker. Even though some of the studies suggest drinking 3 or more daily cups to get the benefits, everyone is different. If it makes you jittery and sick to your stomach, stick to a milder pick-me-up like green tea or yerba mate. But if that morning cup makes you feel awake, alive and eager to greet the day, you might as well indulge (in moderation) in the world’s most well-loved drink.

In case you were as blacked out as I think you were, I feel as though I should reintroduce myself. You were dancing around and enjoying the festive cake and brownies at the JCC inaugural bar mitzvah…I mean inaugural ball, before cabbing to Chinatown and passing out in my bed. Nothing makes me swoon for interfaith relationships like a girl who passes out in my lap in the back of a cab.

You might be asking yourself “why did that sweet boy not call me?” or “did I really wake up in a random guy’s bed in Chinatown?” and other important questions to gauge whether or not last night was a dream, drunken haze or bittersweet reality. Allow me to answer those questions.

While I have not called you, I did text you to make sure you succeeded in getting a cab at 7am and making it to work on time. However, in the heat of the moment last night, you either you gave me the wrong number, or we were both so F’ed up that the number went into my phone incorrectly. My equally blacked out friend (who you met in the bathroom and introduced us on the dance floor) pawned you off on me – the responsible, mitzvah-seeking guy who had been hitting on you most of the night – when it became clear that you could not effectively locate any of your belongings or coherently tell us where you lived.

Upon stumbling into my apt, you decided the party must go on, albeit you couldn’t stand or keep your eyes open. Again, quality traits I look for when asking myself, “could I see myself converting for this woman?” Once you changed into my clothes and passed out immediately in my bed, I wasn’t sure whether to sleep on the floor or in my bed. However, the cute way you drunkenly mumbled to yourself “I should stop drinking on Tuesdays” as you woke up, confirmed my decision to sleep in bed and make sure you didn’t suffocate in the sea of pillows before you.

I must say, the morning wasn’t as awkward as I thought it’d be. I figured you’d freak out, not knowing where you were or whose bed you were in. You took relative comfort in how I left a big glass of water and Excedrin (not rufies) on the table. After offering you more clothing to keep you warm outside and walking you out to get a cab, I went back to bed saying to myself, “I think that classy woman might be the one.”

If you’re reading this, my offer to take you out to dinner still stands. I'm a mensch at heart and will bring the Manischewitz.

I am pleased we have a new administration running America now. I haven't bought in the whole, "Change" ideology as past historical events have proven that politicians usually say one thing prior to coming into office, then change their position once assuming office due to the realities of politics. We saw this first hand when President Obama signed an executive order to limit "special interest" lobbyists from having leverage within The Obama Administration. The day after this executive order was signed, The Obama Administration wanted to apply a waiver to allow a Raytheon Vice President, William Lynn, to become the Deputy Secretary of Defense. It is important to note, that the new president has not assumed office long enough to not allow us to give him the benefit of the doubt and enact his plan for improving our nation. What we as Americans must take into consideration; however, is that we must keep a very close eye so things don't get out of hand as they did within The Bush Administration (Bush 43).

Yesterday I viewed on CNN, a very interesting graphic on where President Obama wants to divert the stimulus money for 2009.

One-third of President Obama's plan is earmarked for Tax Cuts. If we flash back to 2008, which wasn't long ago, we can remember how well The Bush Tax Cuts did. We haven't had too many times in the 20th or 21st centuries where we can reference economic depressions or inflationary recessions, in which we can compare how "Tax Stimulus Plans" assisted or impeded the improvement of the economy. We can; however, compare one of the more prominent cases in US History with the situation America is dealing with, and make theoretical assumptions or conclusions. Aside from this one-third of the budget earmarked for Tax Cuts; food stamps hold more weight than making energy more efficient or even working on technological advancements for renewable energy from geothermal or solar. These tax stimulus checks that Americans will receive will most likely go towards three things, buying electronics made in China, purchasing vices such as drugs or alcohol, or paying off current debt. None of this allocated one-third of the budget, for Tax Cuts will do anything to improve the efficiency of America, making it more free, or assuring our future generations will be taken care of. As of October 2008, the US Debt ceiling was at $11.3 Trillion a stark reminder our future generations will be doomed with debt passed on to them.

President Obama has already stated, "The Economy is job number one". If President Obama is truly concerned about the economy, the legalization of Marijuana on a FEDERAL level will serve to help boost the economy in way he would have never imagined. In order to influence President Obama and other high level officials, we must continue to express our outrage for their failed economic policy and offer solutions to help fix them. One such way is Marijuana legalization. If 85% of all illegal barcotics seized in The United States is Marijuana and $20 Billion is spent annually, the legalization of Marijuana will cut $17 Billion annually from The United States Federal Budget as well as save countless destroyed lives.

One of the theories I have been looking into, is Prohibition and its effect on stimulating the economy. Prohibition is bad for business. For government contracting companies and illegal drug dealers, it is a gold mine. When the government imposes a law creating less supply, the demand and price goes up. Last I heard (2008), the money allocated to fighting the War on Drugs on an annual basis had reached $20 Billion. To put that into perspective, another article I read was that California alone had a $4 Billion revenue from illegal Marijuana sales, while to date for 2009 The United States as a whole has spent over $3 Billion combating "The War on Drugs". With California soon to be out of money for their budget in roughly a week, we may see Arnold Swarzenegger propose such legislation to decriminalize Marijuana completely (If he was wise). Little by little Americans are catching on to the haste and waste from such policy and joining efforts with programs such as The Marijuana Policy Project. Americans are starting to realize that there is more of a likelihood to meet The Tooth Fairy or Santa Claus, than to be harmed by Marijuana or its legalization.

Back to President Obama's Deputy of Secretary of Defense pick, Mr. William Lynn. Lynn's ties with Raytheon are in conflict with any Marijuana Legalization, reform Laws, and/or Drug Decriminalization Laws. Raytheon makes millions of dollars, as do other contractors, on Drug Interdiction efforts thorughout The World. One such contract for Raytheon, was a $12 Million contract to survey The ABC Islands (Aruba, Bonaire, Curacao). This contract was award announcement came 6 months after Mr. William Lynn accepted the post at Raytheon according to his Bio at The Raytheon Website. I want to make it clear that reformist should not stop with William Lynn for their list of "bad people for US Government policy". There are many other government contracting executives, where would it not be for easy money and no competition, they would probably be the flunkies in college they deserve to be. Such contracting executives push for increased legislation for HIDTA (High Intensity Drug Trafficking Areas), NDIC, and the multitude of other ONDCP (Office of National Drug Control Policy) and White House directed Drug Policies (ONDCP added another domain with the word "white house" to sound more official).

These government contracting companies are what made the economy supposedly flourish during The Bush Administration, but as we have learned later our tax money was being thrown at a service with literally no return on investment (ROI). Clearly investing $170 Million on Anti-Marijuana Advertising has done nothing to decrease or eliminate either production, consumption, or related "street crime" that is blamed by Marijuana because all illegal narcotics are grouped into one study on performance. Best analogized, my brother once said, "Marijuana deals are done with a handshake, cocaine deals are done with a gun". Because the US Government has created an artificial Black Market for illegal drug trade, they have not only increased the amount of Americans killed from drugs, but also killed from trying to stop drugs.

What we need to do as Americans is three things. The first is purchase a bunch of Marijuana on the day you receive this Tax Stimulus check. The second thing we need to do is activism. Take to the streets, the internet, go to the whitehouse.gov and change.gov websites and express your concern for legalizing Marijuana completely, no "ifs", "ands" or "buts". Lastly, keep consuming Marijuana. You are not a bad person because you do it. You pay taxes, you help the little old lady at the grocery store, you may have served in The US Military; so don't let the media and uninformed public insinuate you are a bad person for enjoying a natural plant that grows from the earth. As these three things are done, political pressure will be put on officials at the highest levels. If Obama means business, then lets see him start acting and stop talking.

A young Polish woman who was forced to give birth on the London Underground has revealed how she was sent away from a leading maternity hospital just two hours before her baby was born.

Julita Kowalska, 26, became the first woman in 84 years recorded as giving birth on the Tube when her daughter Jennifer was born at Kingsbury, North London, on the evening of December 19 last year.

Earlier that night Julita had been taken by ambulance from her home in North London, to St Mary’s Hospital in Paddington, West London, where Prince William and Prince Harry were delivered.

But a midwife examined her and sent her away.

Julita claims she was told not to come back ‘every time you have pain’. Her sister Anna had accompanied Julita to St Mary’s and, as they began their 35-minute journey home on the Tube, Julita went into labour.

Now Julita, a cleaner who has two other young children back in Poland, has spoken of her anger at her treatment.

Julita, who was one week overdue when she went to St Mary’s, said: ‘I was suffering labour pains every eight to ten minutes. A midwife saw me but said they were very busy. She said the baby probably was not going to be born for two days.

‘So I walked downstairs from the second floor but, by the time I got to the ground floor, the pain was very bad. The contractions were now coming very often. So I went back upstairs but a second midwife really seemed to have a dislike for me.

‘She grabbed my jacket and pulled me out of the maternity ward. Outside the door she told me “You do not need to come back to the hospital every time you have pain” and

“Why did you choose this hospital? You should have chosen one near where you live.”

‘I could not say anything to her. She just said, “Go, go, go.” I was angry.

'I had heard very good things about hospitals here. The hospitals in Poland are very good. I’ve never heard of this happening there.’

Julita, who has lived in the UK for 18 months, then walked a quarter of a mile with Anna to Paddington station.

She said: ‘We rushed to the incoming train but I felt there was pressure in my stomach, like the baby was coming.’

Their journey home involved them catching a Circle Line train to Baker Street, then the Metropolitan Line to Wembley Park and finally the Jubilee Line to Queensbury.

But they never completed it as Julita’s labour pains became so severe they had to get off one stop early at Kingsbury.

Despite both women becoming hysterical as the labour pains increased, they say no one tried to help them until they climbed off the train at Kingsbury.

Julita said: ‘There were lots of people going out to parties on the trains and lots of people looked at us. But no one came to help.’

At Kingsbury station, the contractions were coming almost every minute.

Only the station staff and one young Hungarian man stopped to help Julita on to a bench on the platform.

A member of staff called 999 just before 9pm but the ambulance was delayed because, say the sisters, the emergency service operator said he ‘could not find Kingsbury station on our system’. It arrived 24 minutes later.

Station supervisor Sebastian Rebello said: ‘Julita was in pain. She was screaming. She was in agony as she did not have any painkillers. I was terrified I would have to deliver the baby.’

He helped her into his small, threadbare office just off the platform, gave her a blanket and switched on the heating. It was then Julita’s waters broke.

At 9.22pm the ambulance arrived. Both paramedics were men and one said he had never delivered a baby. With Julita lying on a blanket on the concrete floor, Jennifer was born at 9.35pm.

Julita said: ‘It was very intimidating to have to undress in front of all of these men. It was very difficult but they were very nice.

‘I was angry and scared as we had to wait so long for the ambulance.’

The baby was wrapped in a towel and both mother and Jennifer, who weighed 7lb 8oz, were taken to nearby Northwick Park Hospital, where they stayed for four days.

A month later, Julita’s ordeal has still left her shaken. She said: ‘The worst part was being thrown out into the cold. I thought: “Who is going to help me now?” I had heard from so many friends that it is so good to have a baby in England.’

A spokesman for St Mary’s Hospital said: ‘When Ms Kowalska came to us she was given a thorough physical examination which revealed that she was not in labour at the time.

In these circumstances, expectant mothers are discharged with advice on when to return.

‘It is Trust policy never to turn away a woman who is in established labour. Ms Kowalska was at no stage turned away due to a lack of beds.’

The spokesman said they had no record of Julita returning to the ward and being removed from it.

An ambulance spokesman said: ‘There was a short delay in registering this location on our system but this was resolved within a few minutes of the original call.

‘As soon as a crew became available, they were sent to the scene.’

The only other recorded birth on the Tube was in 1924 when a woman called Daisy Hammond gave birth to baby Marie on a Bakerloo Line train at Elephant and Castle station.

Recession spells comeback for Looney Tunes politics

Newly published figures have confirmed that the UK is officially in recession, with economic output contracting by 1.5 per cent in the final quarter of 2008.

That amounts to the steepest quarterly fall since 1980, and it comes on the heels of an earlier 0.6 per cent dip. Economists say all the criteria for a recession have now been met.

And while that undoubtedly spells doom for consumers, pundits fear it could also herald the return of the long-gone era of Looney Tune politics.

Speaking to the BBC shortly after news of the recession broke, prime minister Gordon Brown wasted little time in transforming himself into the mischievous cartoon character Speedy Gonzalez.

"Every recession in the last sixty years in Britain has been caused by inflation and has been domestically generated," he remarked in a curious Mexican accent, whilst wearing an oversized yellow Sombrero.

"This is a completely different kind of event," the PM purred. "This resulted from a [cue finger quotation] global banking crisis [end quotation]."

But Speedy Gordanez's critics - who had been furiously circling Broadcasting House since the interview began - were quick to aim their fire at him.

"The Tory party have consistently warned that Gordon Brown failed to see the boom and to prepare for the bust," hollered shadow chancellor George Osborne, before lighting the fuse of a crudely drawn Looney Tunes canon.

Earlier, David 'Sylvester the Cat' Cameron had astounded pundits by suggesting the situation is so bad that Britain may soon need an IMF bailout.

"Thith government ith borrowing too much," the Tory leader lisped, when asked about the prospect of a rescue. "It'th one of the largetht budget defithitsth in the world - I have been warning the prime minithter about thith."

Analysts caution that a return to Looney Tunes antics in Westminster will make it almost impossible to decipher what's truly going on in the economy.

They recommend ignoring everything all politicians say, instead turning to experts such as Howard Archer of IHS Global Insight, who recently predicted that UK GDP will contract by 2.9 per cent in 2009. He added that declines are expected to occur across all four quarters.

"This would be the sharpest contraction since the Second World War," Mr Archer glumly noted in a company press release. "Furthermore, we see GDP only flat overall in 2010 as recovery develops very gradually."

El agua de varias fuentes de la ciudad italiana de Nápoles (sur) apareció hoy teñida de rojo con panfletos en los que se podían leer mensajes contra la operación "Plomo Fundido" que el Ejército israelí ha desarrollado en las últimas semanas en la franja de Gaza.

El grupo de extrema derecha "Cuib Napoli" se atribuyó en uno de esos mensajes la acción, que fue llevada a cabo la pasada noche y que propició que este viernes algunas fuentes de Nápoles parecieran haber manado sangre, según informa hoy en su página web el diario italiano "Corriere della Sera".

"27 de diciembre de 2008-18 de enero de 2009, Palestina - Operación 'Plomo Fundido', 1.203 muertos, 5.300 heridos. El mundo se ha quedado mirando sentado desde el borde de la fosa", reza una de las notas plastificadas dejadas sobre el agua roja y que la Policía ya se ha incautado.

Entre las fuentes que amanecieron teñidas de rojo se encuentran las de la plaza del Ayuntamiento de Nápoles, así como la de la plaza Trieste.

El norte de España se queda sin luz

Setenta municipios vascos se encuentran sin luz o con cortes en el suministro eléctrico a consecuencia de los vientos huracanados que azotan al País Vasco, que han registrado velocidades de hasta 167 kilómetros por hora y olas de más de 21 metros de altura. 286.000 viviendas en Galicia, 40.000 en Cataluña, y 7.500 en Aragón se han quedado también sin suministro eléctrico esta mañana a causa de los fuertes vientos.

El principal problema que está causando el temporal que azota el País Vasco son los cortes de luz en diversos municipios. En Guipúzcoa hay una veintena de localidades afectadas en distinto grado, entre ellas Beasain, Bergara, Tolosa, Deba, Elgoibar, Hondarribia y en los barrios donostiarras de Altza, Intxaurrondo y el Antiguo. En Vizcaya, son 27 los municipios con diferente grado de afección por falta de suministro eléctrico entre ellos Zeberio, Orozco, Orduña , Mungia, Sodupe, Alonsotegi, Lekeitio y Ondarroa. En Álava continúan 9 municipios sin luz y otros 13 con afección parcial, entre los que figura Amurrio. La compañía Iberdrola confía en reparar una parte de esas averías en pocas horas, recuperándose el fluido por zonas paulatinamente.

En este sentido, Iberdrola ha informado de que desde la una y media de la madrugada ha declarado la situación de emergencia en su red de suministro. La compañía eléctrica ha registrado más de 150 incidencias a lo largo de la noche, la mayoría a partir de las cinco de la mañana. Con el fin de recuperar la normalidad en el suministro eléctrico lo antes posible, Iberdrola ha movilizado a 400 trabajadores.

60 evacuados en Basauri

Por otro lado, a las dos de la madrugada 60 personas han sido evacuadas de un grupo de casas del barrio Sarratu de Basauri a un colegio, tras levantarse los tejados por efecto del viento. Asimismo, cuatro personas más han tenido que ser evacuadas de dos caseríos la localidad vizcaína de Balmaseda, al verse afectados por el viento. No ha habido daños personales, aunque sí materiales en las edificaciones.

El temporal dejó esta madrugada, en momentos puntuales, a más de 500.000 abonados de Galicia sin suministro de energía eléctrica y al mediodía de este sábado todavía permanecen sin este servicio 286.000 clientes de las distintas compañías eléctricas que operan en la comunidad.

Según informó el conselleiro de Industria, Fernando Blanco, las provincias más afectadas son las de A Coruña, con 162.000 familias sin luz, y Lugo, con 87.800. En menor medida afectó a Ourense, con 28.800 clientes sin suministro, y Pontevedra, con 7.400.

También está seriamente afectado el servicio telefónico, con 45.000 clientes de teléfono fijo incomunicados, 19.000 sin ADSL y 384 estaciones base fuera de servicio, que afectan, sobre todo, a telefonía móvil en el medio rural.

40.000 en Cataluña

En Cataluña, 40.000 hogares han amanecido sin luz a causa del fuerte temporal. El Centro de Coordinación Operativa de Cataluña ha activado la fase de alerta del Plan de Protección Civil de Cataluña (Procicat) por el riesgo de fuertes vientos que se prevén especialmente para este sábado, según el aviso enviado por el Servicio Meteorológico de Cataluña (SMC).

Y 7.500 en Aragón

Además, unos 7.500 clientes de Endesa en Aragón se quedaron sin suministro eléctrico esta mañana por averías en la red causadas por la caída de árboles y ramas en el tendido, lo que a lo largo de la madrugada llegó a afectar a unos 15.000 clientes.

Alerta roja para el sábado por la tarde

También en Cantabria viven las consecuencias de los fuertes vientos que han alcanzado los 120 kilómetros por hora. La alerta es roja para este sábado ya que el viento irá aumentando y se convertirá en rachas huracanadas que pueden llegar a alcanzar velocidades de 150 kilómetros por hora o incluso superarlas con picos de hasta 180 kilómetros por hora. El litoral y las zonas altas serán las áreas de mayor incidencia de este temporal de viento que también afectará a la mar, donde se esperan vientos de fuerza 9 a 10 y olas de entre seis y diez metros.

Se trata de una situación "extraordinaria", "excepcional", que "está siendo tratada como tal", según las autoridades regionales. La Dirección General de Protección Civil del Gobierno regional está coordinando todo el operativo, en colaboración con la Delegación del Gobierno y en contacto con el centro meteorológico, para que todos los servicios estén activados con el fin de "minimizar" los posibles daños. El consejero de Presidencia y Justicia, Vicente Mediavilla, y el director general de Protección Civil, José Luis Gochicoa, han informado en rueda de prensa de todas las previsiones, han explicado que la labor preventiva está "activada al cien por cien", y han trasladado a los ciudadanos diversas recomendaciones para prevenir daños. El mensaje de Mediavilla ha sido muy claro: "Donde mejor se estará, es en casa", viendo una película.

Texas Board of Education votes against teaching evolution weaknesses

AUSTIN – In a major defeat for social conservatives, a sharply divided State Board of Education voted Thursday to abandon a longtime state requirement that high school science teachers cover what some critics consider to be "weaknesses" in the theory of evolution.

Under the science curriculum standards recommended by a panel of science educators and tentatively adopted by the board, biology teachers and biology textbooks would no longer have to cover the "strengths and weaknesses" of Charles Darwin's theory that man evolved from lower forms of life.

Darwin's theory has long been widely accepted in the scientific community, although proponents for a biblical explanation of the origin of humans continue pointing to what they say are flaws in evolution theory.

Those concerns caused the state board to adopt the so-called strengths and weaknesses requirement in the 1980s. Opponents of the requirement had warned that it would eventually open the door to the teaching of creationism in science classes. Board members who backed the rule insisted that was not their intention.

The seven Republican board members supporting the rule have been aligned with social conservative groups that in the past have worked to cast doubt on science-based theories on the origins of life.

The key vote Thursday was on an amendment to the proposed curriculum standards that would have restored the weaknesses rule. The amendment failed to pass on a 7-7 vote, with four Democrats and three Republicans voting no. Another Democrat – who would have opposed the amendment – was absent.

"We're not talking about faith. We're not talking about religion," said board member Mary Helen Berlanga, D-Corpus Christi, who opposed the amendment. "We're talking about science. We need to stay with our experts and respect what they have requested us to do."

Rep. Barbara Cargill, R-The Woodlands, who supported the weaknesses requirement, said there have been "significant challenges" to evolution theory. She cited a recent news article in which a European scientist disputed Darwin's "tree of life" showing common ancestors for all living things.

She also denied that some board members were trying to make it easier to teach creationism in science classes.

"I don't think this means you're supposed to teach creationism or intelligent design," she said, referring to another movement related to creationism.

Board member Ken Mercer, R-San Antonio, who also supported the requirement, cast the issue as a battle about "academic freedom" and "freedom of speech" over whether students can thoroughly examine evolution.

He accused supporters of evolution theory of using false evidence to back the theory.

"Those arguing against us have a bad history of lies," he said.

Board member Geraldine Miller, R-Dallas, rejected the argument by social conservatives that teachers and students won't be able to question the theory of evolution under the new standards.

"There has never been anything in our standards that prevents a teacher from talking about all aspects of what they teach," she said.

"We need to respect what our teachers have recommended to us."

Dallas' two board members, Miller and Democrat Mavis Knight, supported the plan drafted by teachers. They were joined by Republican Pat Hardy of Fort Worth.

Evolution critics did score a minor victory, as the board agreed to an amendment that calls for students to discuss the "sufficiency or insufficiency" of Darwin's tenet that living things have a common ancestry.

That change was proposed by board chairman Don McLeroy, R-College Station, who also supported the defeated strengths-and-weaknesses requirement.

The new curriculum standards, tentatively approved on a voice vote, spell out not only how evolution is to be covered, but also what is supposed to be taught in all science classes in elementary and secondary schools, as well as providing the material for state tests and textbooks.

The standards will remain in place for the next decade, although the process for approving new textbooks won't start until 2011.

The decision will reverberate beyond Texas. Because of the large number of students here, textbook makers tend to carry curriculum decisions made in Texas to other states.

With regard to evolution and other scientific theories, the educator panel advising the state board proposed language that stated students shall "analyze and evaluate scientific explanations using empirical evidence, logical reasoning and experimental and observational testing."

In deleting the strengths-and-weaknesses rule, the panel said the requirement suggested that the scientific community was divided on the theory of evolution when in fact there is little disagreement.

The bloc of seven Republicans supporting the rule tried to add a similar amendment calling for science students to be taught evidence "supportive of and not supportive of" the theory of evolution and other scientific explanations. But it was rejected on an 8-7 vote.

A second vote on the science curriculum standards is scheduled for today.

Action on the science standards caps several months of debate by groups who sought to influence the board on the teaching of evolution. The issue last flared up when the board adopted new biology textbooks in 2003, as social conservatives sought to reject books that were deemed too pro-evolution.
